The main street of Kyiv is certainly Khreshchatyk and you'd better start your sightseeing there. The street is not very long but very impressive. Khreshchatyk looks especially beautiful in spring when chestnut trees are in blossom. The building of this street began at the end of the 18th century.
The first houses were wooden. The forming of Khreshchatyk as a street began in the 1830s-40s. Three-storied buildings with shops, and offices banks were built at this time. In 1892 the first electric tram in the country connected Khreshchatyk with Podil. At the beginning of the 20th century Khreshchatyk became the shopping centre of the city. During the Second World War was Khreshchatyk destroyed. While being reconstructed the street was twice widened and a lot of new multistoried buildings appeared. All the buildings are built after the same architectural design.
Beside government offices and administrative buildings, one can see cinemas, restaurants and cafes in this street. A lot of people go to Khreshchatyk every day. Some of them go shopping because there are many good shops and big markets there. Other people go to the cinema, look at the fountains or sit on the benches. People like the main street of Kyiv. ПЕРЕКЛАД
Головна вулиця Києва — звичайно ж, Хрещатик, і вам найкраще починати огляд визначних пам’яток звідси. Вулиця не дуже довга, але дуже вражаюча. Хрещатик виглядає особливо добре навесні, коли цвітуть каштани.
Будівництво цієї вулиці почалося в кінці 18 століття. Перші будинки були дерев’яними. Формування Хрещатика як вулиці почалося в 1830—1840-х роках. У цей час були побудовані триповерхові будинки з магазинами, офісами і банками. У 1892 році перший електричний трамвай з’єднав Хрещатик з Подолом. На початку 20 століття Хрещатик став торговим центром міста. Під час другої світової війни Хрещатик був зруйнований. Під час реконструкції вулиця була розширена вдвічі, і на ній з’явилося багато нових багатоповерхових будинків. Усі будинки побудовані по єдиному архітектурному проекту.
На цій вулиці, крім державних установ і адміністративних будинків, можна побачити кінотеатри, ресторани й кафе. Щодня безліч людей ідуть на Хрещатик. Деякі з них ідуть за покупками, тому що тут багато гарних магазинів і великих універмагів. Інші йдуть у кіно, подивитися на фонтани чи посидіти на лавках. Людям подобається головна вулиця Києва. Це одна з визначних пам’яток Києва.
